We wanted to find a way to keep in touch with our previous guests, those who have signed up for our newsletter, or purchased Gift Certificates for friends and loved ones, so we've started a newsletter. We look forward to keeping you posted on new specials and packages we add, and on upcoming events in the area, so we thought we'd start with an occasional newsletter (we truly DO mean occaionsal, not more than 1 per quarter). Read on for our first one...
Our First 5 Years!
We can hardly believe it's been 5 years already since we bought the Rocky Mountain Lodge & Cabins, it's gone by so quickly! Where do we begin to share all the things we've experienced and done over the past several years.
We absolutely must start with the fact that we are still very much in love with innkeeping and running the business and have derived the most pleasure and joy from all of our wonderful guests (you)! Brian always says "it's the guests that make it", and he's so right. The best times we have had are the times during and after breakfast, and here and there in the Lodge when we get to visit and get to know you all. We feel like we've made hundreds of new friends and many that we would even go so far as to call "one of the family". We look forward to hundreds more in the upcoming years.
Some of you have been our guests recently so none of this may be news to you, but many of you were our guests in the beginning when we first bought it and will be surprised to see how we've grown and the changes we've made. Our brains are always on the move trying to figure what to do next to "make it better". Our list keeps growing (Brian's "honey-do" list will never really end, I fear). So, in a nutshell, here's what's new at the Lodge, Cabin, and Cottage, and with our family.
Our House: When we bought the business we were living separated for nearly 2 years until we could get our house built on the property. Brian and the kids (all grown up now, I'll touch on them a little later) stayed at our house 40 minutes from here in the north end of Colorado Springs, and Debbie stayed in the office when we had B&B guests. When they could, Brian and the kids would come help out at the Lodge, but the novelty of that wore off after the first year. So we couldn't get our house built fast enough. After 1 year and 9 months, we finally moved into the house on the Lodge property and were living together as a family again! Whew, that was the biggest challenge we had. Glad it's over!
The Lodge: Where do we start? When we bought the Lodge 5 years ago it had 5 bedrooms, and the office, which also had a bathroom, a day bed for Debbie to sleep when we had had B&B guests, a laundry room, and storage room. It needed a number of "TLC" projects and upgrades that we've done over the years, some noticeable, others not as much. We've redone bathrooms (Manitou Room, Ramona Room, and Timberwolf Room), put on a new roof, gutters, new septic system & leach field (that was not fun!), storm windows, mattresses, quilts, linens, towels, new stove, added Wireless Internet, and the list could continue, but I'll stop there.
The Suite: Once we moved into our house we turned our attention to converting the old office into a luxury suite. After 4 months and twice the cost we anticipated, we finally got the Cascade Luxury Suite done, and it has been the #1 rented unit we have, and become our most popular unit. It is set up for romance. It has it's own private entrance, a sitting room with fireplace, Cable TV/DVD/VCR player, a dining table, Flavia coffeemaker, mini fridge, and microwave. The bedroom has a queen bed, fireplace (double sided from the sitting room actually), and a large (and we do mean LARGE) jetted tub for two. And the bathroom has an oversized shower with double sided body spray shower heads (which some people like better than the tub). The whole thing has large picture windows so you can enjoy the mountain views. And, our bed and breakfast guests can have their breakfast served in-suite! Come check it out if you haven't already!
The Cabin: The cabin bathroom has also been remodeled, and a jetted tub has been put in the bathroom along with the shower. New furniture has replaced the old, as well as new mattresses, linens, and towels, just to mention a few upgrades, including Cable TV/DVD player, and wireless Internet. Other ideas are tossing around in our heads that we may get to one of these days (or years).
The Cottage: The Cottage has also undergone a number of improvements. A remodeled bathroom (yes, the old metal camp shower is history), new fridge and stove/oven, furniture, Cable TV/DVD player, electric fireplace and Air Conditioning added upstairs, and Wireless Internet. A new awning is one of the next things planned for the Cottage.
Our Family: As I mentioned earlier, our kids are now all grown up (sniff, sniff). Bethany is long moved out, graduated from college, married, and expecting her first baby in September. Brian and I are VERY excited about being grandparents! Rachel graduated from high school last year and is still living at home (yea!) and attending college in Colorado Springs. She's doing missions work in the summer and is actually at this moment on a missions trip in Africa. Nathan graduated from high school just last month, but joined the army reserves after his Junior year of high school. He went off to basic training last summer, and is currently at his advanced training this summer. He is enrolled in college in Boulder for the fall semester. Then his army unit is being deployed to Iraq in February. His tour of duty in Iraq is to be 15 months. Please keep him in your prayers for a safe return! Once we got our house built and the suite completed, Brian quit his job
in May 2004 and we've been innkeepers together ever since (yea!).
Alright, so much for a "nutshell". I promise the next newsletters won't be so long. Just trying to get everyone caught up on all the goings on around here.
